When people think of Florida heritage, their minds usually wander to palm trees, sandy beaches, or classic mid-century neon signs. But Florida’s real history is far more diverse, complex, and visually fascinating than a generic travel postcard.
This latest release hits incredibly close to home for me. It is a tribute to my childhood home city and a piece of unique history that most people completely look past: Opa-locka, Florida.
From Aviation Roots to Moorish Revival Majesty
Founded in the 1920s by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss, Opa-locka was built with a highly specific, grand vision in mind. Curtiss wanted to create a city straight out of a storybook, choosing a theme inspired by the Arabian Nights. The result was the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the United States, featuring grand domes, sweeping arches, and towering minarets right in the heart of South Florida.
Growing up around that skyline gives you a completely different appreciation for design. It’s a landscape where fantasy meets distinct structural grit.
